Guramishvili's Marani

Guramishvili’s Marani is a unique place — a historic winery in Saguramo closely associated with the name of the Georgian poet Ilia Chavchavadze. The winery was founded in the first half of the nineteenth century, when the Guramishvili family established a tradition in this region of cultivating local grape varieties and aging wine in qvevri. Today, the marani brings together cultural heritage and the latest achievements of modern winemaking. Both classic Georgian wines and sparkling wines are produced here. The atmosphere of this remarkable place preserves the spirit of Georgia’s national history, making every tasting a special encounter with the country’s past.
Guramishvili’s Marani – an authentic winery with a Georgian soul
In the first half of the nineteenth century, Tadeoz Guramishvili built a family marani here, which became one of the most striking examples of secular Georgian architecture of that era. In 1863, Tadeoz’s daughter, Olga Guramishvili, married Ilia Chavchavadze, who later became the owner of the marani. Here, he personally pressed the grapes and aged the wine in traditional clay qvevri vessels.
Chavchavadze is a renowned historical figure, remembered as a poet and public figure who transformed a small winery into one of the key symbols of national culture. After his assassination in 1907, wine production here ceased, and the marani fell into decline.
In 2016, the company Kakhetian Traditional Winemaking fully restored the estate and the wine cellar. Today, qvevri wines, sparkling wines, and classic wines are produced here. The total area of the vineyards is eighteen hectares. The production capacity is so extensive that grapes often have to be sourced from other plantations. Today, the marani is recognized as a cultural heritage monument, combining architectural value, the history of Georgia, and winemaking traditions.
